2009_4. One of the most important ways the news media influence politics is through agenda setting.
(a)  Define policy agenda.

(b)  Explain how the national news media engage in agenda setting.

(c)  Explain the primary reason the president tends to have an advantage over Congress in gaining media attention.

(d)  Consider the table above.
-Describe the difference in the viewing patterns of older and younger age-groups.
-Describe the change from 1974 to 2002 in viewing habits that exists for all age categories.

(e)  Given the information in the table, describe one implication for presidents in their use of the media to promote their political and policy objectives to the American public.

A. Policy agenda- The issues that attract the serious attention of public officials and other politicians.
B. The national news media is close enough to the public to get a feel for the opinions they are having about issues and display them to the nation, which government officials can then tune in to watch or listen.
C. The president has an advantage over congress in getting media attention because the general public actually care what he has to say. Not to say that no one listens to Congress, but people who aren't really interested in government will be more likely to pay attention to the president.
D.  Older people watch more news than younger people.
As a whole, the general public is declining in tuning in since 1974.
E. A large amount of people watch the news at night so the president may want to consider running ads during that time.

North Korea

North Korea has been in a totalitarian state for some years now. It was transformed by Kim Il-sung after he took them into the Korean War. His son, Kim Jong-il took over after his death and continued ruling with total control, however a little bit harsher. By the time Kim Jong-un made it to power, a path of violence was laid out for him. He was a young leader trying to prove himself strong to the world and even threatened a nuclear war with America. Within the country itself, the North Korean people are taught to obey the government and face execution if not. Within the last year, public executions have become popular and Kim Jong-un even had has uncle killed after hearing he was plotting to overthrow the government. Citizens of North Korea attempt to escape into neighboring China, but if they do not make it, they face torture in prison camps.

I do not think North Korea will continue on much longer on this path. The North Korean leaders have tried to keep the flow of information in and out of the country to a minimum. However, information has not only leaked out, but the reality of the outside world is leaking into the people of North Korea and I feel like with knowledge of what life could be like, a revolution could strike up. Or even more scary to the people of America, U.S soldiers may have to intervene.

2009 prompt

A. Two advantages for the House of Reps include having to live in the state they represent and that they get to represent smaller districts.

B. Two differences between senate and house include:
- different terms for different positions such as life jobs for Supreme Court judges and short senate terms that cause people to act differently depending on if they will be reelected or if they don't have to worry about it.
- Separation of  powers allows a harder time to get bills passed so people might be more crafty at going to the right congressional department to get something passed.

C. Because of the separation of powers which leads to the the difference in terms, bills may be passed in one house and not the other because of direct election of senators.

Campaign finance reforms

A. Raising limits on individual contributions
- In favor: Raised limitations on individual contributions will even the playing field for all so that no candidate receives a lot more money than another.
- Against: Some people believe limitations on individual contributions are a violation of freedom of speech.

B. Eliminating Soft Money
- In favor: Citizens believe that all contributors should be held to the same standard and no one contributor should be allowed to slip money to a candidate through an organization.
- Against: Citizens believe that money limitations are unlawful and in order to support their chosen candidate, they've found a loophole

C. Citizens United is a conservative organization that believes money is the equivalent to speech. They affect the proposals because they strongly oppose limitations and have the power to do so. Their arguments are legitament.

The Holiday Jingle by Meg and Hodlie (tune of Jingle Bells)

Dashing through D.C
In a shiny black limousine
Through the monuments we play
Debating all the way .....meow meow meow

Bills in congress ring
Making people cry
Comparable to the Syrian war
Starting in July

Ohhhh Democrats, Republicans, third parties in between
Oh what fun it will be to vote for a bunch of people we don't know.. Hey!
 Executives, senators, House of Representatives
Oh what fun it is to have a President who is tentative.

Palin way up north,
Reid down below
Taking separate stands
on the issue of abortion.

Since the year of 1920
we all now get to vote.
Although rates are decreasing,
it's still nice to know.
